Nucube starts here

Nucube is a music player for the files you own. The same library on desktop and mobile. Play on this device, or stream to an OpenHome renderer on your network.

Streaming apps made that kind of listening easy, and wrapped it in a rental: a catalog you never keep. The usual path for owned files is a dedicated server and extra hardware. We want that ease for music you own, without a Nucube server and without a box to buy. Nucube is a player. It points at the files you already have.

The simple path

Point at the files. Folders on disk. A NAS. SMB, NFS, DLNA. Nucube reads what is already there, and music on a share plays straight from the share — nothing gets copied first. There is no Nucube server. The files stay where they are.

Take the library with you. The desktop scans your music and builds the library once. Sync sends it to your phone or tablet over the LAN — artists, albums, tracks. That is the library, not the audio. After that, the desktop can be switched off. Download the albums you want onto the mobile device so they play with the network gone.

That is the path. Everything else in the product is in service of it.

Principles we will keep

A short list. We do not intend to walk it back.

• We read the collection. We do not rewrite it. Nucube never moves, renames, or tags your files. Tags and cover art enrich our library database, not the files. If you stop using Nucube tomorrow, the collection is unchanged.
• Open protocols. Sources are folders, SMB and NFS shares, and DLNA. Playback is to an OpenHome renderer, or on this device. Nucube speaks OpenHome, the UPnP extension that keeps the queue on the OpenHome renderer. Your mobile device can sleep and the album keeps playing. Renderers with plain UPnP AV only are not supported.
• Album-first. Search returns what you own. No discover feed, no ads, no tracking.
• One output at a time. This device, or one OpenHome renderer on your network.

We are a small company. We take the work seriously and we try to be precise. The work is a player that treats a collection as a collection.

This is where Nucube starts. We began in early 2026. Builds through 0.9 stayed private. 0.11 was the open public beta, and it led to 0.12: our first open release, and our first build on the App Store, worldwide, and on AltStore PAL. What changed on the way is in 0.12: the first open release.

Nucube is ready to live in, and it is not finished. The 0.13 beta is out: on Android through Google Play closed testing (join the Android beta), on iPhone and iPad through TestFlight, and on Linux through the Snap Store beta channel. The next stable release will be 0.14.
