0.11 Release Cycle

Nucube 0.11 — the road to stable

0.11 is out, and for us it is a bit of a milestone. Builds through 0.9 stayed private. 0.11 opens the open public beta — the first version we are putting in front of everyone. A version you can install, point at your music, and live in.

Yesterday we wrote where Nucube starts — the path and the principles. Today is the same release, named: what 0.11 actually fixed.

So this cycle was not about new shiny things. It was about two jobs only: make music on your network drives play properly, everywhere, and clean up the screens we were still a bit ashamed of. Polishing, not inventing. Here is what you get.

Music from your NAS, now everywhere

If your library lives on a Samba or NFS share, 0.11 is the release where that stops being the fragile part of the app.

Playing from a share used to work — mostly, until it didn’t. Slow starts, dropouts on a bad Wi-Fi day, the occasional album that refused to behave. Now every platform — Linux, macOS, Windows, Android, iPhone — plays share audio through the same solid path as local files. Gapless works. It keeps up on slow networks. Nothing behaves differently “because it came from the NAS.”

NFS is now a full library source, same as Samba: connect, pick your export, scan, play. Nucube finds both automatically on your network. And albums described by a cue sheet import as proper albums, not as one giant file with a text file attached.

Streaming from a share to a renderer works properly too — a network player or Hi-Fi that speaks UPnP / OpenHome (many people still say “DLNA speaker” for the same class of device). Skipping around while the music comes from the NAS no longer trips over playback. Share music is not the awkward cousin anymore. Same app, same rules, same sound.

The screens

Once the plumbing was solid, the rest of the cycle went to the house. Layouts that had piled up for years got a real pass, not a coat of paint.

• Playback — from a screen that felt temporary to one you can leave up all evening.
• Audio — libraries and the renderer used to live a click apart; now they sit on one page.
• Add library — reachable from Home and from Audio, without hunting Settings.
• Finding the network — share discovery and renderer discovery no longer hide in the same fog.
• Settings, stats, backup — the admin corners got a clear pass instead of leftover forms.
• Album page — playback and lyrics a little quieter; library insights left the album detail page alone.
• Remote albums — a clearer Remote field, and Open Tailscale when you need it.
• Android tablets — keep the phone layout instead of stretching a phone UI across the glass.
• App icon — finally looks like an app icon, not a placeholder we forgot.

These are not features you demo. They are the difference between living in the app and apologizing for it.

The rest

Scanning. Progress shows the full pass. You can cancel a running scan, retry only the failures, and copy every error at once. Samba and NFS scan much faster than in 0.10. Deleting a library does the right thing when the same tracks still exist in another one.

Formats. APE and WavPack scan from folders and shares — playback of those two is renderer-only (UPnP / OpenHome), for now. You can also play and enqueue from category lists that hold tracks.

Look and language. Official themes: nucube-light, plus two dark looks (blue and green). Italian is a complete second language; English stays the default.

Renderer manners. Switching renderer keeps queue and position. A phone used only as a remote no longer steals the renderer. Picking the speaker you are already on no longer pauses playback. Play and skip errors from the renderer are handled more firmly.

Platforms. iPhone volume buttons control Nucube. Linux AppImage sits next to deb, rpm, and Flatpak.

None of this turns Nucube into a server. There is still no Nucube Core, no library you have to migrate into, no daemon you babysit. The files stay on the share. The app reads them — on the device, or still via a renderer if that is how you listen.

If your library is on a NAS, the fastest way to feel this release is: point 0.11 at the Samba or NFS share, scan once, play an album gapless on the desk, then send the same album to a renderer in the room.
